NEW JOURNALISM II
From Monday, 17 September 2018 to Sunday, 7 October 2018
Narrative journalism: the forms of truth
Of all the changes that our society has undergone in recent years, those that have affected information and communication have undoubtedly been some of the most important. They have transformed the way we relate to each other, explain ourselves, work and create bonds.
Journalism has not been unconnected to these changes, on the contrary, it has lived them in the front line to the extent that the panorama looks very different from a few years ago. Some of these changes affect the debate on the role of journalism in building an advanced democracy, and most have been provoked by the crisis and industrial restructuring of the sector. The most interesting transformations, however, are those that make possible new ways of narrating reality. That is why we wanted to dedicate another stay in Faber to journalism. Another one, after the success and good experience of the residence we organized in 2017 and that already had the collaboration of the group of journalists SomAtents.
In this case, we will highlight what is called, especially in Latin America, narrative journalism, which in the Catalan and Spanish academic tradition has commonly been called literary journalism, a broader and more inclusive label. Whether it is called narrative or literary, or New Journalism in the Anglo-Saxon tradition, this type of journalism goes beyond the conventional storytelling, from American muckrakers in the early 20th century to the present day.
The debate on how we should make quality journalism today in new conditions of production, distribution and consumption, confronts the crisis of the credibility of journalism, and the debate on truth and post-truth. Can literary journalism be an effective working tool in this adverse political, cultural and industrial context?
These will be the main lines of work that Faber will follow during this stay, with others that are related, such as the rise of new narratives —graphic journalism, webdoc, newsgaming or data journalism, for example.
That’s why we call for candidates who would like to apply for one of the scholarships we offer in Faber. The residents will share their stay and reflections with SomAtents journalists and with students and professors of the Master’s Degree in Literary Journalism and Humanities at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. All kinds of professionals who work in the journalistic field or who have reflected on journalism, its limits, its current status and its future are eligible. Professionals (teachers, scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, economists and others) from other fields who have a project related to the objective of the residence.
