From Monday, 24 September 2018 to Friday, 28 September 2018

ARIANNA GIMÉNEZ
Visual Journalist
Barcelona

Bio

She currently lives between Spain and Colombia, where she develops long-distance themes focused on the fictions of race and gender. In her projects she explores different audiovisual languages such as video, photography and archive images.

Graduate in Political Science and Audiovisual Communication, she specializes in visual journalism, studying postgraduate studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, visual storytelling at the Danish School of Media & Journalism (Denmark) and documentary filmmaking at the University of Valle (Colombia). Her work has been exhibited at the VISA Pour l’Image Festival (Perpignan) and DOCField Festival (Barcelona). She has collaborated with different media such as MSNBC, VICE, Televisió de Catalunya, El Periódico de Cataluña, Periodismo Humano, Diagonal, Planeta Futuro, Píkara and Colombia Plural.

Between 2014 and 2016 she developed Hungerland, a multimedia project consisting of photography, video and text on hunger in Spain, which won her the Clic Photojournalism Youth Grant, awarded by the Generalitat of Catalonia. However, Hungerland was a finalist in the City of Art Awards in Barcelona (2017).

Project

During my stay in Faber I will continue to develop “Gracias por venir”, a multimedia project on the relationship between the Spanish colonial era —and, by the way, the Catalan one— and the racism that is currently being practised in the country. “Gracias por venir” aims to open a debate that is not very present in Spanish and Catalan society: the assumption of responsibilities in one of the darkest chapters of our history (the genocide and plundering of Latin America) as well as its direct relation with current racism: from institutions to social relations. This denial is possible thanks to the fictions and narratives that were constructed with the civilizing project of modernity and the certainty that history is written by the victors.

A space to imagine new challenges

This is the first time I have the opportunity to enjoy the Faber Residence. Going there I was really excited: first, because I did it in the hands of the journalist collective Somatents, in which I have participated for a year now, and secondly, to find out about the proposals that led to the residents of all over the world.

As a group we were going with a lot of challenges in which we have been working for months. One of the most important, the reformulation of the medium. Faber has been the space that has allowed us to imagine and begin to trace how we want this new path to be.

It is not easy to apply for new journalistic projects, even less if they are not economically profitable. La Faber has opened our doors generously and will always be part of the history of this new adventure.

Fears and the emotion involved in tackling new challenges have been appearing during these days. To face us, we have not only served as a group care —Faber has also been instrumental in strengthening the ties between us— but we have also been able to count on the support of the other residents who shared their views with generosity.
