Glòria Ribugent shows young People How to Decipher a Medieval Manuscript
Researcher Glòria Ribugent explained to Bosc de la Coma d'Olot high school students how to decipher a medieval manuscript. Ribugent put research in the field of medieval Catalan philology into context and explained the workspace and tools used by the scribes of old.
She then introduced the students to parchments, showing how they were prepared and transcribed and how long it took a copyist to copy a text in the late Middle Ages. Once the concepts were introduced, the students acted as researchers and successfully deciphered words and phrases from the unpublished work, the Book of Horses.
Glòria Ribugent is a researcher in Catalan and medieval philology. She has been a professor at the University of Girona and the University of Barcelona and is currently a professor of Catalan at the University of Leeds, in the UK. She will be at Faberllull until 27 January to fix the text and annotate the "Tractat de les Mules", part of the "Llibre de la menescalia" (c. 1424-1436) by Manuel Díez. The "Llibre de la menescalia" was the reference veterinary work about horses of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and is the medieval scientific work in Catalan with the most preserved manuscripts.
