Cultural identity and cultural maladjustment

Cultural identity and cultural maladjustment

As Culture Mocktail, we held a workshop during our time at Faberlull, all about unpacking cultural identity. We spent time repackaging our original workshop into one suitable for under 18’s, as that was our target audience in the youth centre. During the workshop we realised a vast majority of the children did not speak English – some spoke Spanish and some Catalan, so we sought out some people who could act as translators from the youth club staff, which helped. Due to the language barrier, we knew the children would not understand the cultural and psychological theories we initially wanted to share with them in English, and that it would take too much time to explain them to the new translators during the workshop, so we decided to put a larger emphasis on the games to make the best use of the time available. We included just some of the theory that we believed would be easy for the translators to explain. Despite the challenges, we enjoyed the session and we received feedback from the kids and other staff at the youth centre that the children did too. They were able to delve into their cultural routes through game-playing, and reflect on their cultural identities – which is what we hoped for.
