Giving shape to digitalisation (University of Andorra), Adrián Almazán
As part of my research placement, I contributed to a seminar aimed at guaranteeing a minimum level of digital literacy for Bachelor of Education students at the University of Andorra. The setting, a classroom of girls as young as 19 years old, was very conducive to the development of the discussion I was interested in pursuing: What is digitalisation and what are its real effects on our lives, jobs, societies and planet? The attendees were very interested in the points I shared with them, and were particularly struck by the strong material reality, as well as the strong ecological impact, of the Internet. Their astonished faces were particularly noticeable when they discovered that the Internet is essentially an interconnected network of equipment and cables under the sea. They were also amazed, but not surprised, by the power of algorithms in shaping our daily lives. It was the start of a discussion that I hope has continued in their conversations since then.
