Introduction to Writing Stories, by Christopher Linforth

The class in EOI of Olot focused on what makes a story compelling. We discussed the length of stories, the components of a story, and the language. We further examined some classic and contemporary novels and their first lines. The students completed a close reading of those first lines and explained to the class why they thought each one was compelling and why it would make them keep reading. The students then had to compose their own first lines for their novels. Afterward the students typed them up, and I displayed them on the computer screen. Finally, the class discussed their first lines and what made them work and then what they would write next.
