Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert Offers BELGification Ceremony
Artist Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert (Brussels, Belgium) held a BELGification ceremony at Cala Salsicha, the Artistas Salsichas collective's Olot venue, on Friday. This is a ceremony understood as an artistic experiment that asks how hospitality can inhabit the bureaucratic body of the state. It starts with a simple question: what would happen if the act of becoming Belgian, one of the most important transitions in a person's life, was treated not as an administrative formality but a shared civic celebration? The project proposes a new ritual to welcome people who have recently received Belgian nationality, while dissolving the distinction between "new" and "old" Belgians.
The ceremony explores how a work of art can infiltrate the language of institutions, how art can temporarily function as a legislative experiment and how citizens can come together in a ritual that recognises belonging as a living and evolving practice. The activity was divided into two parts: a talk and a waffle tasting.
Anyuta Wiazemsky Snauwaert is a multimedia artist living and working in Brussels. She will be at the Faberllull Olot residence until 24 November to work on this participatory ceremony that welcomes new Belgian citizens.
