Minister of Language Policy Meets with Catalan Study Associations
The first meeting of international Catalan study associations ended with a conversation with the Minister of Language Policy, Francesc Xavier Vila; the director of the Institut Ramon Llull, Pere Almeda; and the director of the Institute’s Language and Universities Area, Josep-Anton Fernàndez. The meeting at the Institute’s main office was the culmination of the residency that began on Tuesday, 16 September at the Faberllull residence in Olot.
At the event in Barcelona, the representatives delved into the opportunities for collaboration and exchange between the Catalan and international academic worlds. The main objective of the meeting was to analyse how the transformation of the academic world affects the positioning of Catalan studies in universities abroad. Among the strategies shared were the diversification of research areas, traditionally limited to the philological field, and the support of students keen to pursue an academic career.
After the institutional meeting with the minister, the participants listened to the talk by the vice-rector for Culture and Language Policy of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Laura Santamaria, entitled "Catalan Study Associations: Unite and You Will Win." At the end, meeting rapporteur Teresa Fèrriz presented the conclusions that had been reached throughout the four days of debate at Faberllull.
Between Tuesday and Friday, representatives of the Anglo-Catalan Society (UK and Ireland), the Association Française des Catalanistes (France), the Associazione Italiana di Studi Catalani (Italy), the Deutscher Katalanistenverband (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and the North American Catalan Society (United States and Canada) met in Faberllull Olot. The Associació Internacional de Llengua i Literatura Catalanes (AILLC), the Associació de Joves Investigadors en Llengua i Literatura Catalanes (AJILLC) and the Societat d’Ensenyament i Recerca del Català com a Llengua Estrangera (SERCLE) were also present.
