Andorran Archives Abroad

Andorran Archives Abroad

I came to Andorra to study two archives created in Andorra but held in France, which I first learnt about while conducting an international survey of disputed archival claims for the International Council on Archives. With the support of Faber, I was able to meet with the Director and some staff of the Andorran National Archives, where I learnt about the historical formation of these archives and the unique circumstances that led to their removal to France. In further discussions with Andorran cultural heritage experts, at a lecture at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, we discuss concepts of provenance and how “shared archival heritage” is a viable frame of reference for certain archives, such as these, when there has been shared sovereignty. This residency has deepened my appreciation of the relationship between national and archival sovereignty, and has contributed to my study of the shared heritage, which I hope to publish in the near future.
