Interview on Francoism at the Paquita de Girona, by Sinem Tas

On 17th and 18th September, I met Francesca Pujol Fabré (Paquita is what people call her) in Girona to interview her. During the interviews, her daughter Maria Ángels did translations from Catalan into English. I asked her questions about her memories of Franco regime in Spain, her memories during the exile and her experience as a woman in the dictatorship era. During the interview, we had some very emotional and intense moments. Paquita is 89 years old. She had to run away from Girona to Argeles concentration camps in France when she was three years old with her mother, her older sisters and her neighbors. When they returned from France, they found out that her two older brothers were dead in the war. Some of Paquita’s words: ‘’I remember that the station was full of people with their bags. During the journey, my sisters were complaining that they were tired and their things were too heavy. My mom stopped and took my sister’s coat and threw it over the bridge. ‘Now it is not heavy any more’ she said. I was carrying my doll all the way. I did not want to lose it and I remember that I was very happy that I had my doll with me when we arrived to France.’’
