Landscape: reflections on being in nature
During my stay, I gave a talk to two classes at the Escola Oficial d’Idiomes in Olot. My talk focused on how the different meanings of the word landscape over time reflect how we perceive and think about our relationship to the natural world. The talk included a reflection on the landscapes of Chile and how their indigenous peoples have adapted over centuries to live with them, as well as a brief overview of some ideas from contemporary philosophers that might help us to rethink our position as part of landscapes in light of the ecological challenges we face in the 21st century. Both sessions finished with discussions with the students about aspects of ecology, touching on a number of interesting topics, such as the degrowth movement and whether it is too late to take action to protect ourselves from the worst of the climate crisis.
