Conference: “Authenticity and post-truth in process papers”
Joan Soler Jiménez, archivist and records manager, tried to assess how the media uses original documents to justify some of the most important news generated by the political process to achieve a sovereign state in Catalonia. Not only within this context, many news related to corruption cases to try to reduce political force in the process have also been evaluated. “We realized that in many cases the press works with descontextualized photocopies, electronic documents of uncertain origin and uses with a common narrative: the disclosure of the secret”. Despite having an undeniable glamor, the narrative of the secret becomes against any new. Many of the documents used provide much information about the procedure and its production allows us to know better the events described. So public has seen as the UDEF draft that used for undermining the electoral process on 25 November 2012 should never have been given because it is clearly an incomplete document without any legal effectiveness. It has also seen like the doubts caused by two responses that apparently brought European Parliament to a question of one of its membres about whether a DUI would be accepted or not in 2015, could have been resolved by assessing in detail the processes of document management at source and reviewing policy of metadata transmission. These are just two examples of what archiving, document management and diplomacy can make to try to provide an evaluation of the authenticity of documents, which avoided many journalists resorted to speculation or unnecessary risks. “Many news extended over time could have been solved in a day if it had applied a methodology for solid analysis.”
