What is a “cult”? The raelian movement: a UFO religions or flying saucer cult?

Susan Palmer presented the question of how to distinguish a “cult” from a mainstream religion. Referring to sociological definitions of cult, sect and church developed by R.S. Ellwood, Yinger, J. Gordon Melton and others, she used the example of a new religious movement, the International Raelian Movement, which was the subject of her 2004 book, Aliens Adored, to examine the characteristic of a “cult” as opposed to a “religion”.
