Study on sarcasm and harassment in social networks

Ayu Saraswati presented her paper to the masters students at Inter-University Women and Gender Studies Institute (Institut Interuniversitari d’Estudis de Dones i Gènere – iiEDG) at the University of Barcelona. Her lecture focuses on online strategies such as sarcasm and shaming that women have used in combating sexual harassment in online spaces, particularly on social media such as Instagram. She shows how ideologies of race, gender, and sexuality shape one’s experiences online (who is more vulnerable than others to sexual harassment) and how these ideologies and technological apparatus also influence the conditions of possibilities of how one might respond to these harassments. The students were very engaged and asked thought-provoking questions about the ramifications of these strategies to feminist activism.
