Dr. Bipasha Baruah gave a talk entitled “Renewable Inequity? A Global Perspective on Women’s Employment in Clean Energy” at Castell d’Estela school, in Amer. She discussed how countries around the world are experimenting with ways to make their economies less carbon-intensive by creating new green jobs, developing less polluting technologies, or by retrofitting existing sectors such as forestry, agriculture, manufacturing, water and waste management, construction, transportation and energy production. However, very little attention is being paid within these domains to the fact that large groups of people (women, migrants, disabled workers, indigenous peoples, for example) were very poorly represented in the “brown” economy and will also be marginalized in the green economy if social equity policies and programs are not proactively planned and implemented. Dr. Baruah’s talk was broadly aimed at understanding how to ensure that a global low-carbon economy will be more socially just than its fossil-fuel based predecessor. Both students and teachers participated in the conversation and asked questions about how to reconcile environmental protection with economic security and social justice.
