Cultural rights: what for?
Thanks to the collaboration of Xavier Ruscalleda, literature and theatre teacher whom I met by chance one afternoon in Olot, while the opening ceremony of the Lluèrnia Festival was taking place in Can Sau, we managed to carry out two conversations on cultural rights at the INS La Garrotxa, with students of last year of secondary school and first year of baccalaureate (15 to 17 years old), who had history classes with teacher Gloria de Cruz.
To this purpose, I prepared a slide presentation introducing the concept of human rights and the history of their recognition in international normative instruments, including cultural rights as part of these essential rights, and then explaining what these rights consist of and stating that this category of human rights is composed of: the right of everyone to take part in cultural life; the right to benefit from scientific progress; the right to enjoy the arts; the right to the protection of the moral and material interests of the authors of scientific, artistic or literary works; and also the right to education.
The presentation document included photographs of Olot and La Garrotxa that I took during my stay in Faber and that were interspersed with text slides. The aim was not to make the exposition so tedious for the students and the photos helped to encourage some of them to express their opinions and ideas on the issues addressed, in particular the idea of cultural heritage, identities and the relevance of respect for cultural diversity.
