Listening to us to learn and understand

Listening to us to learn and understand

The Women’s Association of La Garrotxa (ALBA) came to the Faber Residence Hall to explain to me not only the many activities to accompany the empowerment of women in La Garrotxa that they have done in the last 25 years of their careers, but also to talk about what they do, their struggles and joys, women, women’s movements and feminists in different parts of the world. Listening to each other is perhaps today one of the most scarce tasks in many of our environments, and we listen to each other to continue learning and understanding the world where we all live; this was a commitment from the beginning of the meeting.

We also talked about the different feminisms and women’s movements in Guatemala, Mozambique, Holland, Mexico and Olot. We stressed the importance of understanding how social struggles and feminist and women’s movements have problems in their own context, and that at the same time many are related to economic, ecological and social problems that are also global. We talked about how the appropriation of lands in indigenous and rural territories, both in Latin America and in Africa, by their governments, together with some Spanish and Catalan multinationals, is today one of the main struggles in women’s and feminist movements in Latin America and Africa.

What does what is happening to women’s movements in Africa have to do with the Garrotxa women’s movement? Faber’s meeting with ALBA closed with the desire to continue opening more dialogues between women’s movements in different parts of the world, affirming that learning and understanding the struggles of the different women’s and feminist movements -from their own learning and their forms of organization of life- allow us to broaden our gaze and understand many of the current problems.
