Researching Dystopia and Theatre on the Contemporary Stage

September 2026

Ten Latin American and European researchers from Catalonia, Chile, Colombia, Corsica, Ecuador, Scotland, France, Italy, Peru and Uruguay will meet at Faberllull to present their research on dystopia and theatre. They will discuss the approaches and theoretical references on which the topic is based, analyse the theatre aesthetics of each stage reality and the way they are linked to the political dimension, and delve into recent texts or shows that address this theme. For one week, the aim will be to create a space for exchange, debate and reflection that focuses on dystopia and theatre.

Several contemporary artistic creations have imagined future societies subject to oppression or totalitarianism. Do they venture into possible worlds, no matter how undesirable, terrifying and apocalyptic they may seem? Or, on closer inspection, do they serve those in power to impose dystopian times that limit mobilisation and protest? Does dystopia negate or imply utopia? The performing arts, both in Latin America and Europe, have also proposed dystopias that explore concerns of a political, military, technological or ecological nature, that invite reflection on the kind of society we build and express the concerns and fears the future evokes.

This meeting at Faberllull consolidates the International Network of Latin American and European Theatre Researchers, linked to the Autonomous University of Barcelona's Centre for Research in Performing Arts, as a space of academic confluence of researchers and groups from the two continents. In this way, a bridge of dialogue and exchange is built to compare and better understand theatrical, cultural and political realities. The network is open to writers, performing arts professionals, historians and researchers interested in participating in the scheduled activities.
