In her talk, “The History of Women, Marriage, and Property in Southern France, 1760-1815,” Caroline Hackett discussed how the experiences of women living in the South have been overshadowed by those living in Paris. Caroline detailed her research process and the sources she used and explained her findings: that the Roman legal tradition in Languedoc empowered a diverse group of women to enjoy more property rights than those in other regions of France. These women were active property owners, as evidenced by notarial data, tax registers, and correspondence. The talk concluded by emphasizing that these findings challenge our understanding of gender and the past. The Faber Olot resident hoped that her work would encourage historians to remember that women’s experiences vary over time and space. An audience member raised a comparison between Caroline’s research and inheritance laws in Catalonia, which inspired her to contemplate a future project that investigates Catalan women’s property ownership in the eighteenth century.
