Catalan traditional dances and its perception

Catalan traditional dances and its perception

My residency in Olot was brief, yet fruitful. I have had the chance to study for one week both of my long lasting passions: catalan language and dance. On the forth day of my stay I have visited the village of Marboleny de les Preses, where I have met director of the local Centre for research of traditions in the Garrotxa region. We have spent almost two hours in vivid conversation discussing the development of traditional dances, perception of traditions within catalan society and our personal perspectives and comparison between Catalunya and Czech Republic. All in all, I have acknowledged many new points of view regarding the focloric movements in general.

Even though I am quite familiar with catalan culture and its dances, yet I have learned something new. First and foremost, the region of Garrotxa, probably thanks to its mountainous character, is very rich for traditional dances, oral history and music, which are very different from what I have known from other catalan regions. Last butnot least the incredible energy and drive which people within the movement possess to make sure that their traditions will be preserved for the future generations. It remains a great inspiration for me.
