Language, Government & Diaspora, Dipika Mukherjee

I spoke on Language, Government & Diaspora, with a focus on the Malaysian-Bengali community in the Klang Valley. My work fits into the framework for Diaspora Studies and contributes to the growing literature on the studies on women and migration; such literature coming out of Malaysian communities and focused on women’s oral histories is still relatively scarce. Theories from sociolinguistics, sociology, anthropology and cultural studies all come into play as the descriptions of life in Malaysia in the early ‘90s to the present day for these women provide an important insight into the ways in which a minority Hindu community manages its marginalization within the larger Malayo-Islamic community.
