Hackathon. Cinema residency for young talents 2025

March 2025

1. WHAT?

Faberllull is running the Hackathon. Cinema Residency for Young Talent, which aims to encourage emerging voices and help them find a path to making film their profession through support, training, creation and production.

The programme aims to connect emerging Catalan filmmakers between 18 and 30 years old with filmmakers from all over the world, building a network of contacts in various countries. It is a hybrid format, with training and technical/artistic experience, in Catalan and English, in Olot and Girona. This residency is an initiative of Faberllull with collaboration from El Modern. Centre Audiovisual i Digital in Girona.

The main purpose of the residency is to encourage new creators with a combination of professional activities. Reinforcing technical and practical knowledge of key elements from the whole filmmaking process with personalised guidance, networking and synergies among residents.

Description of the Hackathon. Cinema Residency for Young Talent.

The programme includes room and half board (breakfast and dinner) at the Faberllull Olot residence for 14 days, guidance through group sessions with all participants, masterclasses and creative spaces.

The purpose of this residency is to allow residents to create an audiovisual piece during their stay. Plus, it aims to help guide young filmmakers through a whole shooting during the residency, with each department putting into practice its knowledge.

Before their stay, participants will receive the script for a short film to work on and develop their artistic vision and staging in order to tackle the huge challenge of creating new narratives. Once the residency begins, participants will start working on pre-production through masterclasses with professionals from the sector. This guidance will help them define and enrich the project, along with the diverse, creative group of residents, and a day trip together to La Garrotxa.

The masterclasses will cover each phase of the creative process, from pre-production to post-production. For pre-production, the classes will focus on production and finding grants, as well as the creative process for each department, including sound, cinematography, directing and art. All of them will be geared towards optimising the shooting process.

The post-production masterclasses will focus on deep understanding and analysis of the visual essence of the film, covering both technical and stylistic aspects. Plus, they will emphasise the importance of emotions in acting and analysing the sound composition and narrative first in the editing process. They will also introduce the figure of the EcoManager and discuss the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

To shoot the short, residents will use their own equipment and that of the collaborating centres. Plus, technical material can be hired if necessary, within the budget.

The piece created will be screened, if possible, by the Institut Ramon Llull network of lecturers and at Cinema Truffaut in Girona.

Residents release all rights to the short film created during the Hackathon to Institut Ramon Llull.
