TRANSLATORS

From Monday, 9 March 2020 to Wednesday, 18 March 2020

TRANSLATORS

George Steiner said that the language of Europe is translation, which is its true lingua franca. Europe and the world communicate through the many cultural contacts established by their cultures. The translation of languages is the first of these contacts, the one with the strongest tradition and the one that has been leaving a mark and creating knowledge for the longest time. Translators act as bridges between cultures and countries, between disciplines, between works. They have become the lines of continuity that prevent the isolation of texts, ideas and currents of thought.

This is why we wanted to dedicate this stay at Faber to everything related to the world of translation. It is the first of many stays in which we will work on issues related to the different voices, knowledge, techniques and debates that give rise to this activity, the transformation of one text into another, the transfer of a story, of an idea, from one country to another.

The work formats and the languages that are invited in this stay of translators to Faber want to reflect on the present, and also on the future of translation at a time when the various technologies begin to interact with a millenary task. Also at a time when globalisation is leading to the existence of lingua francas and hegemonic languages that call into question the idea of translation.

In this residence we will have the presence of Svetlana Alypova, Nina Avrova, Dóra Bakucz, Natalia Beteva, Elizaveta Bukhgoltceva, Balácz Déri, Ekaterina Gadaeva, Marta Pera, Juan de Sola and Gabriella Zomboy.
