Bio

Carlos Moruno Moyano is a historian and substitute professor of contemporary history at Rovira i Virgili University. He received his doctorate from the university in 2022, with a thesis on the political and social transformations of Catalonia during the first-third of the nineteenth century, awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Prize. In recent years, he has progressively leant into researching environmental history and analysing the relationships between human societies and extreme natural phenomena.

He studies episodes such as droughts and floods, the livelihood crises that can arise from them and the social and institutional responses to deal with their effects, and has published several articles, including “Faith, Famine, and Resilience: The 1817 Subsistence Crisis during the Megadrought in Catalonia” in the journal Environment and History (2026), dedicated to analysing the social consequences of the great drought that affected the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula during this period. He is currently developing a line of research on Andorra and the Pyrenean mountain societies, aimed at historically exploring forms of perception, management and adaptation to these episodes.

Project

At Faber Andorra he will work on a project to probe the social history of extreme natural phenomena in the Principality of Andorra between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries, with special attention to droughts, floods, avalanches and landslides.

The objective is to reconstruct these episodes based on historical documentation and to study the responses developed by Andorran communities to these risk situations. The research combines methodologies from environmental history, social history and social ecology with the aim of offering a new perspective on the relationship between society and the environment in the valleys of Andorra.
