Associate Professor and Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at University of Strathclyde
Glasgow (United Kingdom)

Bio

Dr Rhiannon McGlade is Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Strathclyde and General Editor of the Journal of Catalan Studies. Prior to this, she held positions at the University of Cambridge —where she was also a Fellow of Christ’s and Robinson Colleges— and Queen Mary London, as Lecturer and Director of the Centre for Catalan Studies. Rhiannon has published and presented broadly across Spanish and Catalan cultures, history and politics, focusing on comics, the satirical press and humour, including her book, Catalan Cartoons: A cultural and political history (2016). Her current project explores visual print media and gender and sexual-identity politics in Spain’s countercultural scene.

Project

This research time will support the writing of the monograph, In Visible Ink, on the subjects of Visual Print Media, Feminism, and Sexual-Identity Politics in twentieth-century Spain. In particular, it will involve the preparation of a chapter which focusses on Catalonia and its underground scenes, looking beyond Barcelona to include material such as Cau Còmic/Helter Skelter and Llibre de la Selva from the surrounding areas of Girona.

My time in Olot was incredibly valuable. On an intellectual level, I enjoyed dedicated time for writing and reflection, which is almost impossible in the current university context. The surroundings were peaceful and beautiful and the location of the accommodation — away from the town centre while still accessible by walking — made it perfect for dedicated periods of concentration. Informal conversations with other residents also led to fruitful exchanges and inspiration for future work. Faberllull colleagues were the perfect hosts and despite the individual nature of the projects, the fellow residents contributed to a collective sense of multilingual community. Staff at the hotel were very welcoming and the food was also highly enjoyable with changing menus and flexibility for a range of dietary needs. I am grateful to all those involved for my time at Faberllull Olot and would strongly recommend the experience.
