Bio

Carles Velat was born in Barcelona. He studied Filmmaking at the Idep School and later specialised in Screenwriting and Film Direction at the Centre d’Estudis Cinematogràfics de Catalunya. Academically, he has received several scholarships, including a students’ residency at Casa de América in Madrid as part of the 6th Course of Ibero-American Film Project Development, sponsored by Casa de América and Fundación Carolina. He also received a scholarship from CoNCA (National Council for Culture and Arts) for a comparative study of theatrical and cinematic staging based on Ingmar Bergman’s work.

In 2019, he was selected for the València Pitch Forum with the feature film M, which is currently seeking funding from the production company Filmax under the direction of Albert Pintó. In 2020, he was chosen to participate in the international script lab Bolívia Lab with the feature film Sideral, which is currently seeking funding from Fosca Films under the direction of Carles Torres. In 2021, he was selected for isLABentura with the series Los Doce, where he won both the Best Script Award and the Best Series Project Award. The series is currently in development at Volcano Films, which has recently received a development grant from the Regional Government of the Canary Islands. In 2022, he was selected for the DAMA Ayuda laboratory with his feature film Mía & Mía, which was also chosen by GAC (Guionistes Associats de Catalunya) for its sale and development.

Alongside his work as a screenwriter, he has been involved in film productions as part of the direction team on more than 20 films. These include Exodus by Ridley Scott, The Gunman by Pierre Morel, Ismael by Marcelo Piñeyro, The Chosen by Antonio Chavarrías, The Great Vázquez by Òscar Àibar, Sweet Home by Rafa Martínez, Orson West by Fran Ruvira and Circuit by Xavier Ribera. On television, he has worked on series such as Cites, Gran Nord, Gomorra and the programme Polònia.

Project

At Faberllull, he will be working on the script for the series Parvata, co-written with Marina Rúbies.
