MARIA CAMINAL
From Monday, 21 October 2024 to Monday, 28 October 2024
Bio
Maria Caminal, an Andorran film director, aims to tell stories featuring women through cinema. She seeks to give visibility to the women who often go unheard, addressing narratives from a female perspective and sensitivity, while providing a distinctive element through artistic and functional direction tailored for each female character.
Maria Caminal has studied film and specialised in production, screenwriting and direction. Her latest work, Mariana, is a short film written, directed and starring women. The project’s aim is to represent and amplify the voices of the large collective of women affected by sexual harassment, racial discrimination and abuse of power. The piece, currently in distribution, has been selected nationally and internationally by various film festivals. Amnesty International chose the work out of 300 pieces, and it has also been recognised by the International Women Festival in New York and India. Nationally, it is notable for its pre-selection for the 2023 Goya Awards, thanks to its participation in the Octubre Corto Festival in La Rioja.
Caminal has received several awards, the most recent being the 2021 Castellitx Awards, the Rosa de Or de la Pau for Best Short Film Script in Algaida, Mallorca, for Lucía, a short film co-written with Fran Menchón, the screenwriter of Netflix’s The Wasteland.
Project
At Faberllull, Maria Caminal will focus on preparing the feature film Les dones de gel.
Maria, a young woman from a small town, moves to the big city hoping to succeed as a model, but her life takes a turn when she is abducted into a high-level human trafficking network following a casting call. The estate she is taken to is known for its privacy, luxury and exclusivity of the experiences it offers its wealthy clients.
There, she discovers that four other women from different countries are in the same situation, and although the language barrier is a challenge, solidarity, cunning and discretion will be crucial to regaining their freedom.
