ANTONI MATA DAMUNT
From Monday, 16 January 2023 to Monday, 23 January 2023
Bio
Writer and screenwriter. He has a long career in entertainment television in prime time programs recognized with several awards from the Spanish Television Academy. Humor has been constant in his literary work (‘Alienació mental transitoria', Caterina Albert Award 2006; 'Momentos poco estelares de la humanidad', 2013) until the arrival of his first novel, 'Nacidos para ser Breves' (2020). It is a dystopia that crudely reflects and lays bare the individualism of capitalist society. The novel won the 2019 Joaquim Ruyra Prize and has been recognized by readers with the Menjallibres and the Protagonista Jove of 2022. In recent years, Mata tries to fight the economic system as director of content and communication of the Catalan community fintech 11Onze. 11Onze's breakthrough has been recognized at The Webby Awards, Vega Awards, UX Design Awards and has deserved a Bronze ADG-Laus.
Project
During my stay I will be working on the second part of 'Born to be Brief'. It will be called 'The Breath of the Tilled' and will explore the limits of the dehumanization of human beings, what they are capable of enduring and how horizontality and empathy are the key tools of any revolution for a fairer world. For me, the goal of these novels (which stray so far from comedy) is mobilization. I seek a literary activism that ignites the reader and, progressively, makes us collectively take action.
