Bio

Born in Brazil, Julia Sanches has lived in the United States, Mexico, Switzerland, Scotland, and Catalonia, and is the author of more than a dozen translations from Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan into English. Her translations and original writing have appeared in Granta, Paris Review Daily, and The Common, among others, and been longlisted and shortlisted for the National Translation Award and the PEN America Literary Awards. Julia has received support for her work from the PEN Heim, PEN Translates, and the New York State Council on the Arts, and sits on the Council of the Authors Guild, where she advocates for fairer terms for literary translators.

Project

I will use my time at Faberllull to work on an English translation of Montserrat Roig’s El temps de les cireres. Chock-full of references to Catalan poets, artists, and novelists, translating this novel will require ample research that can only be conducted in Catalonia.
