SUMMER MEADOW PHILLIPS
Writer
Andalucia (Spain) and Bollington (United Kingdom)

Bio

Summer’s projects are a symbiosis of art and science, utilising multi-disciplinary approaches to ask key environmental questions arising from human perceptions and subsequent behaviours. Summer’s current writing is a series of short, interlinked science fiction stories based on perceptions and creations of world: exploring the topics of speciesism, altered ecologies and parallel universe theory. The driving force is how our perception of non-human animals affects how our world could be re-built, to either thrive or decay.

Story collection in progress: “Millimetre” – A collection of speculative fiction tales based on the concept of Umwelt – the experience and value of non-human animate life.

Project

Questioning how human beings consider non-human beings is the basis for this enquiry into human minds, animal minds and how the two interweave. By looking beyond our real world, to alternative worlds offered by science and speculative fiction, we can explore more deeply our common and shared entanglements. During my residency I will be writing and editing the collection in progress, alongside further research into how what we read, affects the way we live.
