Bio

Gerardo de Jesús Aguirre Díaz was born in Mexico City in 1958. He is Geologist Engineer, graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico -UNAM- in 1983, and with a Master and Ph.D. degrees in 1988 and 1993, respectively, both from the University of Texas at Austin in the United States. He has been a professor at UNAM since 1980 and a full-time researcher at UNAM since 1992, first at the Institute of Geology and later, and to date, at the Geosciences Center ofUNAM at the Juriquilla-Querétaro campus. His specialty is volcanology and volcanic geology, including the physical and chemical processes in volcanism, the benefits and dangers associated with volcanoes, working mainly on collapse calderas, super-eruptions and their local and global effects. He is dedicated to issues of Geological Heritage, Geoparks, Geoconservation, Geotourism, Sustainable Development and environmental protection. He is coordinator of the UNESCO Global Geopark "Sacred Triangle" Project at Querétaro.
He has belonged to the Mexican National System of Researchers of CONACYT since 1992 and is currently a Level 3 Researcher.
He has been responsible for several research projects at UNAM and CONACYT, and for academic exchange and international cooperation projects. He has participated in projects on collapse calderas in Antarctica, the Andes of Argentina, Costa Rica, Spain, and El Salvador. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses at UNAM since 1980. He is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, the Mexican Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union, the International Volcanology Association (IAVCEI), the Volcanic Geology Commission-IAVCEI, the Geological Heritage Commission-IAVCEI, and the Geoparks Network. UNESCO of Latin America and the Caribbean. He is a co-founder member of the Collapse Caldera Commission of IAVCEI.

Project

I am going to participate as an invited professor in the International Course of Volcanology at Olot, which is organized by FES-Olot and the University of Girona. I am also going to do the field with Professor Joan Marti from CSIC-Barcelona.
