ÁRMANN HÖSKULDSSON
Research professor, Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland
Reykjavik (Islàndia)

Bio

Dr. Hoskuldsson has been studying role of magma in the crust and its distribution on the surface of earth. His research thus focusses on scientific observations and information on individual volcanoes and volcanic areas. Dr. Hoskuldsson was on site volcanologist in the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull 2010, Grimsvötn 2011, Holuhraun 2014-2015 and at present running the on-site observation team on Reykjanes, Geldingadalir eruption that started 19 /03-2021. A big role in Dr. Höskuldsson research are volcanic islands and hazard volcanoes pose on its habitants. Thus, he has been carrying out research in Jan Mayen, Tenerife, Cap Verde, Island of Reunion, and the Azores Islands. Further Dr. Höskuldsson has been working volcanoes in Mexico, Chile, Auvergne and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge south of Iceland. Dr. Hoskuldsson is an author of more than 90 scientific papers and a book on the geology of Iceland, published by Dunedin, academic press.

Project

At Faber, I shall by carrying out studies in collaborations with Professor Joan Marti. I shall be doing studies into the volcanism of Olot. Basaltic volcanism in the Olot area has been connected to intra plate volcanism, similar volcanism as is observed in Auvergne, France. An intriguing part of the volcanism in Olot is the nature of basaltic explosive volcanism as is observed around Garrotxa notably the eruption that formed the Croscat crater. Scoria and volcanic ash preserved in the soil of Olot from an eruption as Croscat, give me important information into the nature of the explosive activity taking place during the eruption such a basaltic eruption. In a similar way it is important to understand the difference between basaltic highly explosive eruption and basaltic lava forming eruption. Olot is an extraordinary area to carry out such studies.
