Bio
Iris Schneider is currently studying Environmental Sciences and Geology in Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona. Her interest in this area of knowledge started during her A-levels, in 2013, when she did a research about energy efficiency in her own high school (Institut La Garrotxa, Olot) both analysing the electricity consumption and the economic cost it represented. The results showed that there were high levels of standby electricity use which could be easily reduced by knowing where they came from and using tools such as timers to switch off the current during the night and weekends. On the other hand, the economic analysis of the high school’s electricity bills showed that to be energetically efficient doesn’t necessarily mean to be economically efficient due to the great weight the fixed cost has over the total prize (73%).
Now, a few years from then, the same electric companies who prized the inefficiency are leading the change towards the use of renewable energies. It’s time to decide who really should be in charge of that.
