Bio

Andreas Paffenholz is a researcher in mathematics at the Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. He studied in Bonn, Cambridge, Zurich, and Berlin, where he completed his PhD at Technische Universität Berlin in 2005. In 2014 he obtained is habilitation in Darmstadt. His work focuses on topics in discrete and algorithmic geometry and their interaction with discrete optimization, algebra, and combinatorics. Since 2005 he is a developer of polymake, a software tool for computations in discrete geometry, where he has initiated the development for applications of discrete geometry in algebra and algebraic geometry in cooperation with research groups working on related software. His most recent project is a database for objects in discrete geometry as a tool for testing and experimenting with new mathematical ideas.

Project

I will mostly be working on a new cooperation between the software polymake, where I am one of the developers, and the computer algebra system Sage, which is an open source project with contributions by a large group of mathematicians working in various fields of mathematics. Interfacing different software packages often allows to explore new research directions linking together different areas of mathematics. At the residency I will meet with several developers of Sage and polymake to discuss and implement the new interface.
