Simon Drewitz is a doctoral student of Mathematics in Fribourg, Switzerland. His focus lies on volumes of hyperbolic polyhedrons and gluings of those polyhedrons. From 2011 to 2015, he studied Mathematics in Mainz (Germany) and Durham (England) before starting his PhD in Fribourg. There he contributes to outreach of Mathematics by organizing the Mathematikon – a series of talks directed at a broader audience than the usual lectures. He also held modules for the TecDays, which are special events at Swiss schools where external experts give interactive lessons to the students. He is passionate about programming to aid mathematical understanding for everyone.
I would like to implement an algorithm that finds a torsion-free subgroup in a discrete group of isometries of hyperbolic space. That is to say, this algorithm takes a polyhedron in a curved geometry and finds a way to glue together finitely many copies of this polyhedron to obtain a manifold. Manifolds are nice spaces, which – on a small scale – look like the normal space one is familiar with.
As an additional project, I would like to create animations which visualize my field of studies in order to increase my understanding and facilitate teaching to a broader audience.
