Bio

Vanesa Miseres studied Letras at the Universidad Nacional de Rosario in her native country, Argentina, and completed her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University in the United States. She is currently Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, United States). She specializes in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Latin American literature. Her areas of research are travel writing, women writers, war literature, gender, cultural, and food studies. Her first book, Mujeres en tránsito: viaje, identidad y escritura en Sudamérica (1830-1910) (North Carolina Studies in the Romance Languages and Literatures, 2017) won the 2018 Alfredo Roggiano Prize for Latin American Literary Criticism (IILI) and also received Honorable Mention for the Victoria Urbano Critical Monograph Prize (Association of Gender and Sexuality Studies, former AILCFH). Professor Miseres is launching a new book on Latin American women’s accounts of domestic and foreign armed conflicts, from independence through World War II.

Project

At Faber Residency, I will be working on an article on the archeological expeditions to the Yucatan Peninsula of Alice Dixon (1851-1910), a UK photographer, traveler, and amateur archaeologist who, with her husband Augustus Le Plongeon (1826-1908), traveled from 1873 to 1885 to Mexico and South America.
