Literature and Cultural Studies Researcher

Bio

Paola Uparella is a PhD Candidate in the Spanish program at University of Notre Dame. She holds an MA in Latin American and Iberian Studies (University of Notre Dame, 2015) and a BA in Literature (University of los Andes, Colombia 2010). Her areas of research include Colonial and Transatlantic Studies, Cultural Studies, 19th-century Latin American literature, Afro-Hispanic studies, gender and sexuality, and biopolitics. At the intersection of transatlantic and gender studies, her current work focuses on the violent and colonial emergence of the visual regimes of the female body in medicine, literature and art, and on the historical, material and symbolic violence that made the female body and genitalia ultra-visible and intelligible. Paola Uparella’s articles appear in peer-reviewed journals such as H-Art, Hispanic Issues, Revista Iberoamericana, A Contracorriente, and Lingüística y Literatura.

Project

During my stay at Faber, I will advance the last chapter of my dissertation that examines The Wax Polychrome Sculpture Collection (late 18th century) displayed in the Javier Puerta Museum of Anatomy at Complutense University of Madrid. This collection includes a series of casts and sculptures that represent various stages of pregnancy from conception to childbirth. Many of the sculptures both quote and question the work of Scottish anatomists William Smellie and William Hunter, the so-called “fathers of modern obstetrics.” My research focuses on the importance of these anatomical models within the larger context of the emergence of modern health and hygiene politics and the medical regulation of the female body in Spain.
