Project
My time at Faber will be spent editing and workshopping a chapter on colorism in popular culture. Both Lupita Nyong’o and Viola Davis are Academy Award winning actresses with numerous films behind them. Yet, both have remarked on colorism as being one of the biggest hurdles in their road to success and maintaining it. Colorism is rarely covered in critical thought around privilege, discrimination and inequality. My interest lies in the way colorism informs who is seen as desirable and bankable as well as the ways in which it disproportionately affects women.
