ANNUKKA LAHTI
Postdoctoral researcher, Gender Studies, University of Jyväskylä
Jyväskylä

Bio

Annukka Lahti works as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Jyväskylä. She is interested in the affective shaping of inequalities between, within and across relationships, (bi)sexualities and genders. Her dissertation ‘Bisexuality in Relationships: A Queer Psychosocial Approach’ developed a theoretical-methodological hybrid: a queer psychosocial approach to analysing bisexual women’s relationships talk. In her current, post-doctoral research project, Where the Rainbow Ends, she explores relationship break-ups  queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and asexual people in Finland from an affect theoretical perspective. She has published on bisexual women’s relationships, inequalities in heterosexual relationships, singlehood and QLGBTIA+ break-ups. Her co-edited book Family and Personal Relationships under the Rainbow (in Finnish) will be published in 2020. She has developed her thinking on affect in the Academy of Finland funded research project Just the Two of Us? Affective inequalities in intimate relationships (project 287983).

Project

During the residency, I will work on my postdoctoral research project When the rainbow ends, which focuses on separation experiences of queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and asexual people in Finland. In the project, I analyze survey and interview data of Finnish QLGBTIA+ people who have experienced a recent relationship-break up. The main aim of the project is to explore how the changing social and legal positions of QLGBTIA+ people and their relationships entangle with the affective processes of break-ups. I approach the becoming of the relationship break-ups through Deleuzo-Guattarian framework as assemblages, where multiple and complex elements come together. This framework highlights the ongoing and unpredictable processes of relationship break-ups. The first year of the project (2017-2018) was funded by Alli Paasikivi foundation and years 2020-2022 are funded by the Finnish Kone foundation.
