Bio
Max Woodfield Wheeler (London) has a DPhil from the University of Oxford and is Emeritus Professor of Linguistics at the University of Sussex (England), where he taught general linguistics from 1989 to 2007. He has dedicated his research to the synchronic and diachronic phonology of Catalan, the evolution of its inflectional morphology and issues concerning diachronic Romance linguistics.
He is the author of Morfologia i fonologia catalana i romànica: estudis diacrònics (2007) (Catalan and Romance Morphology and Phonology: Diachronic Studies), The Phonology of Catalan (2005), and, with Alan Yates and Nicolau Dols, Catalan: A Comprehensive Grammar (1999). He has also translated the Catalan chivalric romance novel from the fifteenth century, Curial e Güelfa, into English (Curial and Guelfa, 2011).
He has been secretary and president of the Anglo-Catalan Society and is a member of the board of the International Association of Catalan Language and Literature. He has recently been working on grammatical studies and editing texts in the Gaelic language of the Isle of Man, where he usually lives.
