Bio

He teaches and researches at the School of Modern Languages (Newcastle University). His research focuses on Indigenous language revitalisation efforts from the grassroots in Latin America, particularly in Mexico. His PhD thesis explored linguistic ideologies and revitalisation in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico (2014). In recent years he published on the use of music, especially the appropriation of rap among indigenous youth, and digital technologies, as tools of resistance, socio-political mobilisation, and key strategies for linguistic and cultural revitalisation. He has been a member of Linguapax since 2001.
