Bio

Kaissa Ould Braham has a background in philology. She was born in Kabylia (Algeria) in 1972 and began writing in a French-Amazigh newspaper in Amazigh. In 1998 she created a cultural magazine in Amazigh-French with Salem Zenia and a group of journalists. Meanwhile, she worked as a French and English teacher at her local high school. During the Black Spring of 2001 - a revolt in Kabylia to demand recognition of Amazigh identity - the magazine converted to a newspaper format to cover the events.

Ould Braham worked as an Amazigh teacher at her local high school from 2000 to 2008, when she had to flee Algeria and settle in Catalonia with her family, hosted by the PEN International Catalan Centre. She took the opportunity to go to Paris and do a master's degree in Amazigh studies at INALCO, with a dissertation on the poetry of the women of her people, which she collected orally. She served as coordinator of the project for teaching Amazigh to immigrant children of Amazigh origin during the tripartite.
