Fien Veldman is a writer from The Netherlands. She was awarded the Joost Zwagerman Essay Prize for her essay 'Not really making it', about growing up in a working-class neighborhood. She received the Elise Mathilde Essay Prize for her essay 'Grenzen, deuren en ogen open', about the diversity of Dutch literature.
Project
At Faberllull Olot, Veldman will be working on her second novel. In this gothic novel about gentrification, the affective structure of the relationship between humans and stone (especially megalithic structures and stone circles) is juxtaposed with the structures of late capitalism, consumerism, and current-day economic and political feelings. She is interested in the tension between (internalized) late capitalist feelings (for example, a ‘productivity mindset’, rationalism, consumerism) and the relationship with the natural world – in this case, the relationship between humans and stone.
