Project

I am working on a book about diachronic language change within a Malaysian-Bengali migrant community, and specifically focusing on the voices of women. Theories from sociolinguistics, sociology, anthropology and cultural studies all come into play as the descriptions of life in Malaysia from the early 1990s to 2020 for these women provide an insight into the ways in a minority Hindu community manages its marginalization within a country facing the growth of politicized Islam. This work contributes to the growing studies on women and migration; the data from Malaysian communities focused on women’s oral histories is still relatively scarce.
