Participation in the 9th edition of the postgraduate course in Volcanology (UdG) for resident experts in volcanology

The 9th edition of the Postgraduate Course in Volcanology offered by the University of Girona and organised by the Fundació d'Estudis Superiors d'Olot and the Fundació UdG: innovation and education, will be held in Olot from the 18th to the 31st of October. This is also in collaboration with Geosciences Barcelona-CSIC, the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI), the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, the Girona Provincial Council, the Chair of Geography and Territorial Thinking of the UdG, the Olot Local Council and Espai Cràter.

The teaching staff of the postgraduate course is made up of the course directors, Joan Martí Molist and Adelina Geyer Traver, alongside 5 other experts:

Carmen López, director of the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN)

Gerardo Aguirre, professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico

Llorenç Planagumà, director of Tosca and geological advisor to the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park

Bruno Scaillet, professor at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans

Juan Andújar, professor at the Institut des Sciences de la Terre d'Orléans

The course will explain how volcanoes work, the associated risks they can pose, as well as their benefits. It will also take a detailed look at the latest scientific advances in understanding the dynamics of their eruptions and the effects of these, predicting and preventing eruptions, monitoring volcanoes and exploiting them economically.

23 students from around the world, including Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Spain, will participate in this edition. The course will combine theoretical sessions at the Fundació d'Estudis Superiors d'Olot with excursions to different sites of the Girona volcanic field, located in the volcanic area of La Garrotxa and the areas of La Crosa de Sant Dalmai and Canet d'Adri.
