What does the Irish stage tell us women and queer individuals in Ireland?

For my lecture at University of Barcelona, I wanted to give students an insight into the exciting worlds of Irish theatre. Whilst Ireland’s theatrical output is sometimes studied at universities in Catalonia, there is an emphasis on certain Anglophone playwrights and, oftentimes, key issues around identity are ignored. To remedy this, we explored the role of women and queer individuals across a range of lesser known plays. I explained to students how these characters create a legacy within Irish history, and this is something translators need to have in mind when bringing foreign theatre onto the Irish stage – as I learnt with my own translations of Catalan theatre. Students were surprised to learn of the history of Ireland and where there are shared narratives with Catalonia.
