Queer International: Acknowledging the diversity within the diversity
During her time at Faber, Tanja Dittfeld prepared her upcoming fieldwork with LGBT+ activists in Uganda. On a sunny afternoon in Girona, Tanja had the fortune to meet with three scholars from the University of Girona to discuss positions, experiences and approaches to furthering social justice for and with LGBT+ peoples in different socio-political contexts. The discussion was informed by the scholars’ work on four European LGBT+ projects – spanning from restorative justice in anti-LGBT+ hate crimes, violence against LGBT+ children and health professionals’ capacity to work with LGBT+ peoples – and Tanja’s past work with LGBT+ health in civil society organisations in Denmark, Zambia and Uganda and previous research about LGBT+ peoples in Uganda. Tanja also visited a contemporary exhibition entitled ‘Identity Construction, Transgender Experiences’ by Mar C. Llop displayed at the University of Girona. This gave rise to further reflections on the representational ethics involved in rendering LGBT+ peoples and bodies visible as an artist or academic.
